Conventions are using things like punctuation, correct spelling, paragraphing and using capitalization and grammar rules correctly.  Writing conventions are used to help make your work more readable.

You have a great story to tell.  Make sure it is not unreadable because of spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors.  Most likely when your work is edited, the editor will be checking for conventions.  Save yourself and your editor some grief, and pay attention to these small, yet extremely important details.

It may be best to write a chapter or section, and then come back to it in a couple of days, with fresh eyes.  You may be able to spot an opportunity to revise or edit a section that you could not see earlier

Also, with all the technological tools available, please use spell check, grammar check, and online reference tools like a dictionary and thesaurus. It's fast, convenient, and extremely helpful.
